Taylor is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury

Newcastle manager Chris Hughton said he would like to keep Steven Taylor on the day the central defender was placed on the transfer list.

The 24-year-old's deal ends next summer and BBC Radio 5 live understands he has rejected a new four-year deal worth £40,000 a week.

"I think most know that it is a club decision to put him on the transfer list," Hughton said.

"He is a player that we would like to keep here at the football club."

Hughton added: "I think there are always going to be things that test us and there will always be other issues, but the important thing is that Steven is a player we would like to see at this football club.

"He is a very good player and certainly I hope an agreement can be made."

The former England Under-21 captain's agent Paul Stretford says his client is eager to talk about a new deal, despite being put up for sale.

"Newcastle will not be held to ransom over the wage demands of Taylor," said Ian Dennis, 5 live's senior football reporter.

It had been reported that Taylor was holding out for terms of about £60,000-a-week after he rejected Newcastle's offer.

"Figures released to the media do not accurately reflect the position of either Steven or his agent," stated Stretford.

"Steven was disappointed and surprised to hear through third parties that the club had decided to transfer list him.

"He has always given 100% to the club and will continue to do so given the opportunity."

Taylor came through the ranks at St James' Park and started out at right-back before moving to central defence and earning the captain's armband.

He missed much of last season through injury as Newcastle won the Championship to earn promotion back into the Premier League.

Taylor is currently out with a shoulder problem which is expected to sideline him for the first three months of the campaign.

Meanwhile Newcastle United will complete the signing of Cheick Tiote providing he is given a work permit on Thursday.

The 24-year-old Ivory Coast international has already passed a medical and the fee is reported to be in the region of £3.5m from Twente Enschede.
