Gosling was attracted by the Magpies ambition

England under-21 midfielder Dan Gosling is confident his new club Newcastle United can retain their Premier League status this season.

Gosling recently signed a four year deal with the top flight newcomers after a contract dispute with former club Everton.

"The main aim is to stay up," Gosling told BBC Newcastle.

"With the quality in the dressing room we should be staying up and it would be a disaster if we didn't.

Gosling added: "With the confidence and quality and the team spirit we've got I think we've got enough to stay up this year."

Newcastle's ambition was a big factor for Gosling, who also attracted interest from close rivals Sunderland.

"It is a massive club, the fan base is huge and it is a club with great potential," Gosling continued.

"Obviously I spoke to the gaffer and the coaching staff and they all had a vision of climbing up the league over the next few years and I wanted to be part of that.

"We're on the same wavelength and I'm just happy to be here now."

Gosling was ruled out for nine months in March after injuring his cruciate ligament and is yet to resume training.

The 20-year-old began his career at Plymouth before moving to Everton in 2008, making 61 appearances scoring eight goals.
