Bellamy misses Wales trip
Craig Bellamy celebrates his winner against Feyenoord
Bellamy gave a superb display at Feyenoord in midweek
Newcastle have risked the wrath of Wales boss Mark Hughes by withdrawing Craig Bellamy from the crucial Euro 2004 qualifier with Azerbaijan.

The striker, who scored twice in the Champions League win over Feyenoord, will also miss this weekend's Premiership game against Southampton.

We are not being selfish, we are being sensible
Newcastle director of football Gordon Milne

"We are withdrawing Craig under the instructions of the specialist," Magpies director of football Gordon Milne told Radio Five Live on Friday.

"As much as he wants to play, we have to respect that."

Newcastle maintain that Bellamy risks damaging his career if he fails to heed the advice of doctors.

"We have to think about the welfare of the boy," added Milne. "We are not being selfish, we are being sensible."

Newcastle boss Bobby Robson said on Thursday that he thought Bellamy would miss the trip to Azerbaijan.

"We have waited patiently for Craig and spent a lot of money on him to get him right," said Robson.

"The advice we have been given is that he should play one game per week until it has settled down and Craig is sure about it.

"We have warned the Welsh FA about his situation and we wouldn't expect him to travel or to play next Wednesday in all honesty."
