Middlesbrough lose Stephen McManus to ankle injury

Stephen McManus
McManus could also miss Scotland's friendly with Faroe Islands

Middlesbrough defender Stephen McManus faces a spell on the sidelines after tearing an ankle ligament in Saturday's 2-1 home defeat of Crystal Palace.

McManus, 28, was withdrawn after 39 minutes and is set to miss Scotland's friendly international against the Faroe Islands on 16 November.

"Stephen had a scan and it's come back that he has some ligament damage," boss Tony Mowbray told the Boro website.

"He's looking at a period out, he went over on his ankle and twisted it."

McManus had previously been ever-present for the Teessiders, having made 32 appearances for the club since an initial loan move from Celtic in January last season.

The transfer was finalised in July, with Boro paying £1.5m to secure the international defender on a three year contract.
