Defender Danny Hone's first-half header handed Darlington their fourth straight win in a poor quality encounter.
The former Lincoln City man nodded home after Chris Senior had earlier gone close heading straight at Tamworth keeper James Severn.
Danny Thomas shot wide for the visitors before Jay Smith missed the target after the break.
And Darlington keeper Sam Russell had to be at his best to deny Thomas again from inside the box towards the end.
