Middlesbrough defender David Wheater has expressed his delight at being named in the England squad for the friendly with France on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old has been in good form for both club and the England Under-21 side and admitted he has surprised himself with his progress on Teesside.
"It has capped off a really good year for me," he told BBC Tees.
"I didn't think I'd be in the first team at Boro. I was at Darlington last year but I've come in and done well.
Supporters have taken the humble Wheater to their hearts this season and the centre-back is adamant he can continue to keep his feet on the ground.
"It won't change me at all. I know the squad gets cut down from 30. I might take my autograph book," he joked.
"Just being named in the England set-up is a fantastic achievement and I have to thank Gareth Southgate.
"I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him."
