Wheater has become a first-choice player for Boro this season |
Middlesbrough defender David Wheater has signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal at the Riverside. The 21-year-old, who came up through the ranks as a trainee, has made 28 first-team appearances this season and was out of contract in the summer.
He also had loan spells at Darlington, Wolves and Doncaster.
"This is something we've worked towards for a couple of months. He maintained all along that he wants to stay with us," said boss Gareth Southgate.

The emergence of Wheater was one of the reasons why the experienced Jonathan Woodgate was allowed to leave and join Tottenham in January.
