Captain Kevin Nicholls parts company with Luton Town
Nicholls led Luton to two promotions and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy
Luton Town club captain Kevin Nicholls has left the club to focus on his recovery from a serious knee injury.
The 31-year-old, who scored 33 times in 244 appearances during two spells with the Hatters, agreed to terminate the remainder of his contract.
Managing director Gary Sweet told the club website: "It was Kevin who approached us with the suggestion.
"He did not want to take money out of the club when he felt that he wasn't contributing," he added.
"We also feel that it may be in Kevin's best interests to part with the club as it will give him the option of focusing solely on himself and getting back to full fitness rather than having his progress diverted by Luton Town.
"The word legend is spoken about too easily, but it couldn't be more appropriate in Kevin's case. He is arguably the club's most successful captain. Nothing would please us more than to welcome him back to Kenilworth Road as an opposition player and as a guest of the club any time he wishes."
His last game for Luton was in their 2-1 defeat by Crawley in February.
