Cisse faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after being stretchered off |
Lyon boss Gerard Houllier insists he is still keen to sign France striker Djibril Cisse from Liverpool. Cisse, 24, will be out of action for several months as he recovers from a broken leg, suffered in a World Cup warm-up match against China.
Former Liverpool boss Houllier signed Cisse from Auxerre for 14m in 2004 but left before he saw his signing play.
"We await his return to fitness, which could be around Christmas," he told the Sunday Telegraph.
Houllier added: "He came to England at my invitation, although circumstances were to dictate that I left as he arrived.
"In fact I had been hoping to extend a belated welcome to him after the World Cup, for we at Lyon were the favourites, along with Marseille, to sign Cisse for the new season."
Liverpool hope Cisse could be playing again by November following a successful operation on the broken limb.
The player missed most of the 2004-05 season with a similar injury to his left leg sustained at Blackburn.
During qualification for the World Cup finals Cisse was France's leading scorer with four goals.
