Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse will not play again this season after breaking his left leg in Saturday's match against Blackburn. The injury was confirmed after the 14m France international was taken to hospital following a tangle with Blackburn defender Jay McEveley.
Cisse had surgery on Sunday to pin his tibia back together after his shin was broken in two places.
The French forward will now stay in hospital for five or six days.
Liverpool confirmed he will then begin his rehabilitation programme under the supervision of their medical staff.
Liverpool's Milan Baros and Jamie Carragher sustained broken legs in the league fixture at Blackburn last year.
And Carragher admitted the team were all shocked when they found out the extent of Cisse's injury.
"We were all sick when we heard what had happened," said the defender.
"We can only extend our best wishes to Djibril and hope he recovers quickly."
