Lincoln City chairman Bob Dorrian aims for golden era

Lincoln City's new chairman Bob Dorrian is a man on a mission - namely to take the club to the Championship, where he believes they can hold their own.

Now be in no doubt I don't expect to see Bob making a big speech about this or put together a glossy brochure targeting a date when this will happen.

He is not going to make himself a hostage to fortune in that way.

But what he is determined to do is focus most of his attention on helping manager Chris Sutton.

Whilst he won't neglect other parts of the club, Bob sees himself as a football chairman first and foremost, focused very much on the first team.

Now to some that may sound like an obvious no-brainer, but actually it is a slight change on what has happened at Sincil Bank in recent years.

For me in the past eight years the Imps have, rightly, been focused on stabilising the club financially after the pain of administration.

Now though the chairman, and many of the club's fans, feel it is time to carefully speculate to accumulate.

Like many other League Two fans he must have watched the progress of the likes of Doncaster Rovers and Scunthorpe United with a mixture of interest and envy

Don't though expect the club to be throwing the financial kitchen sink at things, but don't be surprised if you see them investing a little bit more than normal.

Listen to interviews we have done with Bob on BBC Lincolnshire over the last few weeks and you can hear a quiet determination for the club to progress.

For him the choice is pretty clear are the Imps happy to trundle along in League Two mid-table obscurity or are they going to move forward.

Like many other League Two fans he must have watched the progress of the likes of Doncaster Rovers and Scunthorpe United with a mixture of interest and envy.

Now, though, he has their success as proof to doubters that with careful investment something similar can be done at Sincil Bank.

The big question facing the lifelong Imps fan now is how he gets more money into the club to help it push forward.

Whilst Dagenham & Redbridge have proved you don't necessarily need deep pockets to be successful it certainly helps.

The Imps board had hoped that former chairman Steph Wrights decision to step down combined with an appeal for investors may have bought new money into the club.

But sadly it didn't.

Now, retired from his business to focus on matters at Sincil Bank, Bob Dorrian will be looking at ways of finding more money to support manager Chris Sutton.

Quite how that will be achieved we will have to wait and see.

But be in no doubt after inheriting a well run financially stable club, Bob Dorrian wants to leave his successor the Imps in a similar state but in a higher league.
