Lincoln City trialist Cian Hughton is hoping his performances will earn him a permanent deal at Sincil Bank.
The 20-year-old full-back played in the Imps' tour of Germany and Wednesday's goalless friendly against Ferencvaros.
Hughton told BBC Radio Lincolnshire: "It's a good opportunity for me, with the injury to Paul Green which is disappointing for him and the club.
"First it's about earning a contract, then breaking into the team and then holding down a place."
Hughton, who is the son of Newcastle coach Chris Hughton, was released by Spurs at the end of last season.
"I was there for 12 years so it was a shock to come away from there but this is a good club", he said.
"[Peter Jackson] asked me to come in and said if I he decided I wasn't what he was looking for he would tell me so.
"He seems like a straightforward guy so I just have to keep my head down, work hard and hopefully take my opportunity."
Meanwhile right-back Paul Green is set for an operation on a groin injury next week and will miss the start of the season.
