| Thursday, 13 February, 2003, 12:37 GMT Leicester plan for future ![]() Lineker leads the bid to save Leicester The Gary Lineker-led consortium finally took over Leicester City on Thursday - then announced plans to change their name back to Leicester Fosse. Incoming chairman Jon Holmes has launched a campaign to revert to Leicester Fosse - as the city's original team was known until 1919. Holmes' consortium, which also features former Foxes striker Lineker, has formally taken charge of the club subject to Football League approval at a board meeting on Thursday. The club will no longer be under the control of the administrators and Holmes plans to offer the fans the chance to have a new name to go with their new future.
Holmes said: "I want to institute a debate as to the club name. I will be putting forward the suggestion that from next season the club is known as Leicester Fosse. "The club has been reclaimed by the community and I want to give the community the chance to tell us what their club should be known as. "The more I thought about returning to the name the more sensible it seemed. "Over the next couple of weeks we will have a debate through the local media as to whether the fans want to stick with City or they want to go with Fosse. "City is the name of 15 clubs in the league and the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa are unique." City status Leicester Fosse were founded in 1884 but went into liquidation shortly after the First World War. 'Fosse' refers to the fact the soccer club was formed at a meeting house on the Roman Fosse Way by old boys of Wyggeston School in 1884. Ironically they were taken over and underwent a name-change to their existing title to coincide with Leicester's elevation to city status. Leicester have been in administration since last October after building up massive debts of about 50m. Lineker has invested a six-figure sum into the consortium's fund. |
