| Saturday, 30 November, 2002, 11:03 GMT Celebrity Big Bother: The Leeds story The football public has spoken and cast its vote. The chill wind of opinion has whipped through the Big Bother House following the AGM final and blown out its last squatter, leaving just one sole occupant, the winner... David Batty. Yes, while all others have been ejected, rejected, and evicted, the Batty boy remains snug and warm in the Big Bother house.
But it was a close-run thing in the end with former boss David O'Leary, who patently still has a fair bedrock of support at Elland Road. Batty's triumph reflects the affection with which the Leeds following has clutched him to their collective bosom like a chucky hen cosseting her chicks. The Player That Terry Forgot, Batty is as Yorkshire as puddings and grit and was favourite from day one. Just four points seperated the pair in the final vote, with 52% voting to boot O'Leary, and 48% electing to evict Batty. In the end, Batty's win was a triumph for honesty, integrity and loyalty, qualities which have taken him to the nation's heart. Just like Mark Owen. David Batty: WINNER
His refusal to be drawn into house arguments - in contrast to the slick charms of Terry and Peter - won him legions of admirers. Bats made a visit to the diary room on Tuesday and let rip with his feelings about the problems within the camp. "You hear all sorts of rumours that I've had a bust-up with so-and-so or I'm ruining things, but none of it is true," he said. One of the main criticisms aimed at evicted Terry was that he did not do enough to get Bats involved in house games. David O'Leary: EVICTED A huge outsider just days ago, he sailed through the first three days of evictions by keeping his mouth shut while all around stitched themselves up.
His old pal Peter nominated him for eviction after David's failure in several tasks - notably the "Premiership table" game - left the house budget in tatters. David then blew huge amounts of the budget on items that Peter decided the house did not need - and the pair were still arguing about it when Peter got the boot. But David has had the last laugh. Lee Bowyer: EVICTED He acquitted himself well - but his surly attitude and a number of problems away from the house left him in an impossible position, and he was duly given the boot.
Lee liked making his presence felt in the group. But after drinking the entire house supply of alcopops he was unpopular with the other housemates. He will not be missed in the Big Bother house. Terry Venables: EVICTED On Wednesday he was overwhelmingly voted out of the house, stunning the usually chirpy gaffer.
"But I've no regrets. You can't go through life having regrets about what things you've done. I've always gone for what I believe is right and I've never regretted it. "You can always say I could have done better or I should have done better, but you don't regret things you do otherwise you'd never do anything Terry was an early favourite to win Celebrity Big Bother - but from the start he had a tougher time than anyone expected. Charming and a natural on-screen, he nonetheless struggled to come to terms with some of the challenges that the housemates have been set. The mess he has made of the regular "Win a Home Game" contests ultimately cost him his place in the house. Peter Ridsdale: EVICTED He was a popular individual a year ago, but since then it has been downhill all the way for this chatty character.
Peter was responsible for nominating David O'Leary for eviction - something David did not forget - and Terry feared Peter could do the same to him. Interestingly, the infra-red cameras in the bedroom reportedly showed Peter mumbling in his sleep about a job at the Football Association. |
