Kettering Town boss Marcus Law has completed the signing of defender Nick Green from his former club Barwell.
The 25-year-old has agreed non-contract terms with a view to signing a longer deal with the Poppies.
Law told BBC Radio Northampton: "He's an infectious character and technically, he's very good.
"I'm not one for carrying players wherever you go, but with Nick, I always felt that I had a gem who hadn't been picked up or acknowledged."
Green was a scholar at Villa Park and also played for Stourbridge Swifts, RC Warwick and Quorn.
Law added: "He can play in various positions. He was unfortunate not to pick up a contract at Aston Villa, and I'm sure he will be a fans favourite.
"He's a player I know is good enough to be at this level and move the squad up another notch."
