Colback has yet to make a start for Sunderland

Ipswich Town's on-loan midfielder Jack Colback says the team are finally fulfilling the potential he saw during his first loan spell at the club.

The 20-year-old Sunderland player has returned to Portman Road after being part of the Ipswich side that finished 15th in the Championship last season.

He told BBC Radio Suffolk: "When I came down last season that's where I expected them to be, pushing up there.

"It's no surprise whatsoever and I think it was a matter of time."

Town, who are currently sixth in the Championship, may have failed to live up to expectations in the last campaign but Colback impressed during his 41-game spell, winning the player's player of the year award.

Despite setting such high standards last term the youngster is eager to replicate his previous form.

"Fans are always expecting - it's just something you take with being a footballer," he said.

"It's good having the pressure. People thrive on pressure and I'll be coming down with a lot of confidence and hopefully I can do as well as I did last year."

Upon his return to Sunderland Colback failed to break into Steve Bruce's first-team.

Two substitute appearances, including a sending off on his debut against Wolves in the final game of last season, are all he has to show from his time with the Black Cats so far.

He admits it has been frustrating: "I was disappointed, I went back with a lot of confidence.

"I played a few games pre-season and got some positive feedback from the manager.

"I was quite positive and enthusiastic about getting a chance but it never really came around."
