Ipswich have put a move for Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi on hold because of a hamstring injury to the 26-year-old.
The problem was revealed by a medical and is unlikely to heal before the end of the August transfer window.
"It's disappointing but you have to be careful with hamstring injuries," Ipswich boss Jim Magilton told the club's website.
"We don't want a repeat of last season when Shefki Kuqi joined us and suffered a hamstring injury in his first game."
A move for Ameobi seemed close to completion after the two clubs had agreed a fee but the tall forward will have to look elsewhere for more first-team football.
Ameobi, who has worked his way up from the youth team ranks with the Magpies, is currently down the pecking order at St James' Park with Michael Owen, Obafemi Martins, Mark Viduka and Alan Smith all preferred options.
Ameobi, who had a spell on loan at Stoke last season, has also been linked with Norwich.
