Ipswich to honour Robson
Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson
Ipswich Town are to unveil a statue in honour of former manager Sir Bobby Robson on Tuesday.

The statue has been created by sculptor Sean Hedges Quinn and will stand in the club's Portman Road ground.

The timing couldn't be better as we celebrate not only the unveiling of the statue but also Sir Bobby's recent knighthood

It was commissioned by the Ipswich Town Supporters' Association and funded by Ipswich Borough Council and electricity company TXU.

Ipswich chairman David Sheepshanks said: "We're very pleased to be hosting the reception for Sir Bobby Robson.

"The timing couldn't be better as we celebrate not only the unveiling of the statue but also his recent knighthood in just recognition for his tremendous achievements in football."

After the official unveiling more than 300 guests will attend a reception in the club restaurant.

Sir Bobby still owns a family home in the town and is involved in charity fundraising for Ipswich Hospital where he has received treatment for cancer.

The Mayor of Ipswich, Richard Risebrow, said: "Bobby lives here in the town and still is held in high regard.

"He led our club to glory and then England with distinction at Italia 90.

"The council is proud to be supporting this tribute and I am sure many Ipswich people will turn out to cheer him when the statue is unveiled."

Robson joined Ipswich in 1969 from Fulham.

During his 13-year stint at the club they won the 1978 FA Cup and three years later the Uefa Cup.

He left Ipswich in 1982 to take up the position of England manager.

In August 2000 the club and its supporters' paid similar tribute to Sir Alf Ramsey, who was another Ipswich manager who went on to lead the England side.
