Ipswich gain Uefa Cup place
Inter Milan knocked Ipswich out of last season's Uefa Cup

Ipswich have won a place in next season's Uefa Cup via the Fair Play league.

The name of the Suffolk club was drawn from the hat, alongside Czech team Sigma Olomouc, during the half-time interval of Tuesday's European Under-21 Championship final.

European football's governing body grant Uefa Cup spots to three countries in the top 18 of their Fair Play league.

Norway, by virtue of topping the league, have already been handed a spot.

After all the disappointments of the last few weeks this comes as a big lift to the club

The Tractor Boys were relegated from the Premiership last season and only finished fourth in the Premiership Fair Play table.

But with top three finishers Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle all earning European spots by virtue of league position, Ipswich get a second chance in the Uefa Cup.

George Burley's side played in last season's Uefa Cup, knocking out Helsingborg and Torpedo Moscow, but were defeated by Inter Milan.

Ipswich chairman David Sheepshanks told BBC Radio 5 Live: "After all the disappointments of the last few weeks this comes as a big lift to the club and a big lift for the fans too.

"We had great fun going into Europe last year and now we're one year older and one year wiser.

"The thrill won't make up for not being in the Premiership but it is still a big bonus."

Wales were in contention, but Carmarthen Town missed out on a European spot.
