"If it's a good move for the kid, then you have to be fair and honest to them, especially if they have been really good in their time with the club and not been any problem whatsoever.
"We both understand each other's situation and that's why there is plenty of good feeling on both sides with this one."
Hull have also announced the signing of 19-year-old Altidore on a loan deal from Villarreal, subject to the striker obtaining a work permit.
The pair are Hull's first signings of the summer after failing in pursuit of a number of other targets, including strikers Darren Bent and Fraizer Campbell.
"We are delighted to have them on board and both players boast international pedigree," said Brown.
"One area we needed to address was goals from midfield and I'm hoping Seyi can help out there.
"Jozy is unproven at this level but has great potential and we hope can fill the void of goals from the front line."
Hull chairman Paul Duffen has ruled out a move for Fulham striker Bobby Zamora.
