Huddersfield sign striker Denton

Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield Town have fought off competition from Blackburn and Crystal Palace to sign Wakefield FC striker Tom Denton, 19, for an undisclosed fee.

The 6ft 7ins forward turned down Rovers to sign a three-year deal at Town.

Manager Stan Ternent told the club's official website: "I am delighted to have signed Tom.

"He has got a great deal of potential and I don't think it will be long before the fans see him in a blue and white shirt."

He continued: "Both Crystal Palace and Blackburn Rovers were interested in him and he's someone I've had my eye on for some time now. Importantly, he's a big fan of the club, so that's a step in the right direction."

I've been a Town fan all my life and I wanted to play here

New Huddersfield striker Tom Denton

Denton, who was born in Huddersfield, had been offered a deal by Blackburn after scoring for their reserves, but opted for a move to the Galpharm Stadium instead.

"It's a dream come true for me. I've been a Town fan all my life and I wanted to play here. I had a trial at Palace and a week's trial at Blackburn and they made an offer, but I only wanted to play for Huddersfield Town.

"Boothy [Huddersfield forward Andy Booth] is my hero and I'm looking forward to meeting up with the lads this weekend."

Denton will be in the squad for Saturday's League One game at Colchester but will not feature.
