Wakefield have been hit by the collapse of their plans for a new stadium.

The Super League club were awarded a three-year licence on the promise of a move to an all-seater, community stadium on the outskirts of the town.

But the local authority said the project would be difficult to deliver within the �60m budget and by 2012.

Wakefield Council has pledged to investigate other options, which could include a stadium-sharing arrangement with neighbours Castleford Tigers.

Both clubs need to move into new homes to retain their places in Super League after 2011.

"We are in discussions with the local authority to find a solution which will satisfy these cost and date issues," said a Wakefield spokesman.

The Rugby Football League have announced they were aware of the potential snags over Wakefield's stadium proposals and are to meet the club to discuss their next move.

A spokesman said: "The RFL were aware that the club's plans for a new stadium were not as advanced and developed as they might have been, despite the projected completion date of 2010.

"A meeting will now be staged with the Wakefield club to establish the full details of the current situation and discuss the related issues."
