Histon boss Steve Fallon has revealed the club are in talks to bring in an unnamed League Two striker.
The Stutes are in the market for a new forward after agreeing to let Damien Reeves leave for Northwich Victoria.
Fallon told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "We're looking to get a striker in from a League Two club, but we think the fee might be a bit of a problem.
Refusing to name the player Fallon said: "He's in his late twenties, but it'll be off if we can't agree a fee."
Fallon is exploring further options in the event a deal cannot be struck, but has a very clear idea of the sort of striker he would like to sign.
"We've got three very good strikers in Antonio Murray, Jack Midson and Danny Wright," he said.
"So we're looking for an out-and-out striker, we want someone who can come in and allow us to use our options."
Damien Reeves arrived at Histon on the back of a successful season with Farsley Celtic, but struggled to break into the first team.
"He was never going to be happy on the bench, he needs a fresh start to kick-start his career," Fallon said.
"We don't want to hold someone back as that's not fair, so hopefully he'll get some first-team football elsewhere."
Meanwhile Histon midfielder Robbie Nightingale has agreed a deal with Cambridge City.
Nightingale had spent the past few weeks on loan with the Southern Premier side and rejoins former Histon team-mates Adie Cambridge and Matty Haniver.
