Hibs drop keeper Mallo interest

Hibernian manager John Hughes
Hughes is assessing his new squad at Hibernian

Hibernian manager John Hughes has been priced out of signing former Falkirk goalkeeper Dani Mallo.

Hughes is on the lookout for a challenge to Yves Ma-Kalamby and Mallo is out of contract with the Bairns.

"I'm looking for a goalkeeper to challenge Ma-Kalambay," said Hughes. "We need that competition for places.

"I was speaking to Dani Mallo and I was interested in bringing him to Hibs. The money that he's getting offered over in Belgium, we can't match."

Mallo was signed by Hughes for the Bairns midway through last season and the new Hibs boss has already been reunited with two former Falkirk players in midfielders Patrick Cregg and Kevin McBride.

"I'm bringing players in that are at a good age and have still got their best years in front of them," said Hughes.

"We've got a lot young kids. We've got the successful Under-19s coming up and I think one or two of them have got big futures in the game. They'll get their opportunity.

"They're just finding their feet at the moment and I wouldn't hang my hat on them to take me where I want to go, but I'm quite sure some of them will have an important part to play throughout the season.

"It's the exact same as I did at Falkirk, nurturing these young kids."

Striker Steven Fletcher departed Hibs to join Burnley this week and Hughes has been linked with moves for Rangers' Alan Gow and Sunderland's Anthony Stokes, the forwards he worked with at Falkirk.

"I've been linked with so many players and that process will continue," Hughes said.

"I've never picked up the phone and made any phone calls to players, agents or opposition managers. I'm just concentrating on what I've got in at Hibs right at this moment in time and that'll remain the case.

"I just want players that really want to play for the jersey.

"I don't mind them using Easter Road as a platform as a lot of players have done and gone onto the English Premier League and doubling and trebling their wages. You can't knock them for that."
