Turner set the foundations for promotion in his first spell with Pools
Hartlepool United director of sport Chris Turner has warned supporters that success cannot be achieved instantly at Victoria Park this season.
Pools were among the strugglers last term, and Turner says although he is hoping for an improvement, fans must temper their expectations.
"You don't go from relegation material to being in the top six, a very good top six," he told BBC Tees.
"It took me three years last time to get the team ready to compete."
Turner steered Pools from relegation battlers to promotion candidates in his first spell at the club, from February 1999 to November 2002.
And although he had moved onto Sheffield Wednesday by the time the club earned promotion from Division Three, it was the core of the squad he had put together on Teesside that went up.

Meanwhile Turner's side are still waiting for their first win of the season at Victoria Park, although in the League Cup second round they pushed Premier League side Burnley into extra-time before losing.
And the former Sheffield Wednesday boss reiterated his desire to see Pools progress in the right way, by entertaining supporters with a positive attitude and style.
"We don't want to go route one, or to a certain style of football, we want to mix it up a bit," he added.
"I want our wide players to put balls into the penalty box like the two boys did in the reserves last night, then we'll get more goals, more pressure and win more games."
