Hartlepool centre-back Ben Clark is to undergo hernia surgery and will be out for six weeks.
The former Sunderland defender had been struggling with a groin problem and will now miss the start of the season.
Clark, 26, joins captain Ritchie Humphreys in the treatment room at Victoria Park.
Humphreys will miss the first game of the campaign at MK Dons after picking up a new injury on top of an existing Achilles problem.
