Hartlepool United have signed former Sunderland defender Peter Hartley following his release from the Premier League club.
Hartley, 21, graduated from the Black Cats academy and made his debut during the Championship winning season against Leicester in January 2007.
The centre-back went out on loan to Chesterfield where he played 12 games between February and May 2008.
Hartley becomes manager Chris Turner's third signing of the summer.
