Hartlepool boss senses Cup upset

Hartlepool United caretaker manager Chris Turner has urged his players to produce a shock in Saturday's FA Cup third round tie with Stoke City.

The Potters arrive on Teesside without a win in seven matches and Turner believes his side can spring an upset against the Premier League club.

"The FA Cup is about players, it's about the opportunity to make a name for themselves," he told BBC Tees.

"The chance of shocks and disappointments are very high."

He added: "In my opinion it's the greatest cup competition in the world.

"It's every club's dream when the numbers are coming out of the hat that you get an attractive draw," he said.

"You can look at it the other way that you want a non-league team at home but we've lost to a non-league team.

"When you come out of the draw with a home game against a Premier League club then you're going to get a good gate and a good game.

"It challenges everybody at the club, it challenges the players against players of a higher level, it puts a test on those players.

"Stoke City players will come to Hartlepool into the unknown, but they come with that feeling at the back of their minds that 'We could get beaten today, this could be an embarrassment.'

"It's always going to be in their minds going to a lower league club."

Turner is a big admirer of Stoke City manager Tony Pulis, the man who took the Potters into the top flight after a 23-year absence.

But Stoke's gritty, stubborn brand of direct football has not proved popular with the media and particularly with their contemporaries in the top flight.

And the former Sheffield Wednesday manager Turner admitted he felt Pulis and his side fail to get the credit they deserve for their achievements.

"Tony's taken that club from the bottom end of the Championship and turned them into a Premier League side in a short space of time.

"A lot is talked about Rory Delap's long throws and that's all they've got and set-pieces and I think that is disrespectful.

"Getting a winning formula at any club whether it be Manchester United or Stoke City is difficult and to get that and full houses at the Britannia Stadium is fantastic.

"The style is immaterial to me, what's important is success, and that's all football fans want - success."
