Hartlepool United boss Danny Wilson wants to retain midfielder Antony Sweeney despite keeping him on the transfer list.

Sweeney has been unable to agree terms on an extension to his current deal but Wilson says he is doing all he can to keep hold of the 24-year-old.

He told BBC Tees: "The script with Tony is he was put on the transfer list but not with a view to going.

"We stated we didn't want him to go but it's a prerogative players have."

Pools' form has been patchy in recent weeks but it is the form of Sweeney, who has scored three times in five games, that has caught Wilson's eye.

"He wanted to get games under his belt and I'd say in the last three or four games he's been excellent."
