Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler has refused to rule out bringing Simon King back to the club.
The defender, 28, joined Plymouth Argyle on loan in August but an injury crisis may force Hessenthaler's hand.
Five defenders at Priestfield are either injured or doubtful for Saturday's visit of Port Vale.
Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent: "I don't think he'll be back for this weekend. If we do pick up any more, it may be an option for us."
Only eight outfield players trained on Thursday but despite the situation, the manager is reluctant to recall King.
"I don't really want to disrupt what Simon's doing. He's getting games there on a regular basis," he said.
"If we were to bring him back, it might only be for that one game [against Torquay]."
Plymouth would not be able to replace King as they were banned from making any loan signings on Thursday.
