Fuller thinks boss Andy Hessenthaler has improved team spirit

Gillingham captain Barry Fuller says the team spirit is the best he has ever known, despite the fact they sit 16th in League Two.

Fuller, 26, was brought to the club by former manager Mark Stimson in 2008.

"Maybe people are questioning that we're not together - but I think that we've showed that we are," the defender told BBC Radio Kent.

"We're a great unit and we're probably more of a unit than we've every been since I've been at this club."

Gillingham go into Saturday's game at League Two leaders Port Vale having not won away from home in 32 games.

But a few weeks ago they pulled off a surprise 2-0 win over early leaders Shrewsbury and Fuller believes they can break their notorious record at Vale Park.

"We know that they're on a high at the moment - they're obviously sitting on top of the table because their performances this year have been exceptional," he said.

"We know it's going to be a tough game and we have to go there and deal with that.

"Maybe that's the right place to go there and end it, maybe that is the team we need to play at the moment - the top team.

"Obviously when we played Shrewsbury - who were top at the time - we matched them and our quality showed through so maybe we can go and do that against Port Vale as well."
