Gillingham striker McDonald wants to forget defeat

Gillingham striker Cody McDonald is urging his team-mates to forget about the embarrassment of their defeat at Accrington Stanley last week.

The Gills lost 7-4 at the Crown Ground and sit 18th in League Two going into Saturday's game with Stockport County.

The 24-year-old, who is on loan from Norwich, told BBC Radio Kent: "It's been tough but at least we have a game to look forward to now.

"If we keep thinking of last week we will get nowhere."

McDonald scored his second goal for the club in the defeat, but that was no consolation for the striker.

"I've got the attitude that you win as a team or you lose as a team, we all have to take the rap for that," he said.

"But I'm feeling good, I needed a run of games, it's been good to get a couple of goals but I'd rather not play so well and get a scrappy 1-0 win."

McDonald has been playing alongside fellow forward Adebayo Akinfenwa but could be partnered with Stefan Payne against Stockport as Akinfenwa battles with injury.

McDonald said: "He [Akinfenwa] has been good to play alongside. He talks to me, he's more experienced than me, he gets me through games, so hopefully he's about.

"He is a good person to have around the place if he's playing or not. I hope he is available at the weekend.

"We've got a great squad here, we haven't had our best squad out every week, but it's 10 games gone, which when you play 46 games is not a lot, but we have to get wins now if we are going to push for the play-offs or automatic promotion."
