Stimson's Gills won only one of their last 12 League One games
Gillingham manager Mark Stimson has asked for more time to lead them away from the relegation zone - but admits he does not know if he will get it.
Tuesday's 1-0 defeat by Tranmere was the Gills' ninth game without a win and saw them drop into the bottom three.
Stimson told BBC Radio Kent: "I would love to stay in charge and turn it around because that would give me so much satisfaction - but who knows?
"I'm realistic because this is a results business."
Gillingham face Yeovil on Saturday, looking for their first win in 2010 and their first away victory of the season.
Stimson said: "Touch wood, I'll be in charge at Yeovil.
"If I am I'll put a team out that will surprise a few people.
"Knowing the personnel they won't be shy at getting on the ball and playing, and that's the way we will get out of this."
Stimson, who signed a three-and-a-half year contract in November 2007, said talks with chairman Paul Sculley had been "positive."
"I would love to stay in charge with the chance of turning things around because this is fantastic job at a fantastic club that has a fantastic backing," he said.
He added that key players Simeon Jackson and Andy Barcham had not been at their best.
"Simeon has not been playing anywhere near his best while Andy Barcham is not firing on all cylinders," he said.
"If players are lacking confidence I want them to tell me.
"If they don't want to play then I'll give someone else a chance. Unless a player has been really awful, I would be looking to keep unchanged sides for the next three games.
"We're at the business end of the season so points are vital."
