Gillingham boss Mark Stimson has admitted they are trying to sign Grays defender Jon Ashton - but are waiting to hear back from the non-league club. "Grays won today (Saturday) but are still in the FA Trophy and could get into the play-offs," Stimson said after the 1-0 defeat by Northampton.
"So they don't want to lose one of their best players.
"We have to be patient and cannot force it, but he is somebody I would love to add to our squad as he is a winner."
The Gills signed another Grays player, striker Dennis Oli, for an undisclosed fee last week.
Stimson added that transfer-listed striker David Graham has turned down the chance of a move away from Priestfield - with two Blue Square Premier clubs and one League Two side interested in signing him.
