Gateshead defender James Curtis to miss season opener

Gateshead defender James Curtis will miss the start of the Blue Square Bet Premier season with a broken fifth metatarsal in his left foot.

Curtis, who faces a six-week lay-off, is the club's longest serving player having joined from Washington in 2003.

Meanwhile Tynesiders boss Ian Bogie has taken former Swindon Town defender Matt Heywood on trial as potential cover.

The 30-year-old was released by Grimsby in February and has been without a permanent club since.

Gateshead take on Greennock Morton in a friendly at the International Stadium on Thursday.
