Gateshead have signed German forward Christoph Ascherl on a non-contract basis after he impressed during a trial at the International Stadium.

The 23-year-old has played college football in the United States as well as undergoing a trial at Polish side Wisla Krakow in 2007.

However, manager Ian Bogie will have to wait to hand Ascherl a debut as he awaits international clearance.

Meanwhile former Livingston defender Phil Cave has signed a one-year deal.

Cave returned to Gateshead on a loan basis last season after failing to secure a first-team place at Livingston.
