McCormack led Thunder to the Challenge Cup quarter-finals |
Gateshead Thunder head coach Steve McCormack has agreed a three-year contract at the International Stadium. McCormack arrived on Tyneside in May to help maintain the club's Championship status and is positive about his future at the club. "I was really excited about taking the opportunity at Gateshead Thunder when presented and I am as excited now as on my first day," he said. "I am really enjoying working at Thunder and there's a great spirit." The former Scotland and Widnes coach is currently involved in a relegation battle with Thunder, with only four games left to play in the Championship and the club in the relegation zone. But chairman Steve Garside remains confident that McCormack is the right man for the job of keeping Thunder afloat come the end of the season. "Steve McCormack has years of experience at Super League and Championship level and has been a great asset in the club's first season in the Championship," said Garside. | 606: DEBATE |
"As a club, we are looking at establishing Gateshead Thunder as a strong force in the Championship and then building for the next level. "Steve is an important part of that. I was really pleased when he joined the club in May and I am equally pleased that he has committed to Gateshead Thunder for the next three years. We are all in this long term." McCormack took Whitehaven to two National League Grand Finals before his move to Widnes, where he spent four seasons, winning the Northern Rail Cup before his departure at the beginning of the current season. Alongside former coach Chris Hood, McCormack helped Thunder to the Challenge Cup quarter-finals, where they were beaten by holder St Helens.
