Barr set for new role at Falkirk

Falkirk manager Eddie May is to switch Darren Barr from central defence to right-back but says it is not a criticism of former boss John Hughes.

May is concerned at the way his well-publicised intention to change the Bairns' style of play is being painted.

"John did a fantastic job for Falkirk, we had a good relationship and I am sure he will do a fantastic job for Hibs," May told BBC Scotland.

"However, we have look forward and I just want to do what I think is best."

Hughes won praise in the media for a neat passing style of play, but May will demand that his side show more attacking purpose.

The new Bairns boss thinks that a few of his comments have been used by elements of the press to imply a criticism of his predecessor.

And he stressed that the decision to move Barr is something Hughes might have approved of.

Barr made his Scotland debut last season after impressing as a centre-half for Falkirk.

But May said: "John always recognised that Darren could do a job in both positions, but he did not have the personnel here to shift Darren.

"That's why I have brought in two central defenders during the summer."

May has signed Brian McLean, who was out of contract with Motherwell, and secured the transfer of Marc Twaddle from Partick Thistle.

Indeed, May suggested that Barr himself, who has reportedly been interesting Hearts and Hibs, felt more comfortable at right back.

Meanwhile, May dismissed reports that he was interested in Thistle's Northern Ireland goalkeeper Jonny Tuffey as a replacement for Dani Mallo, who is poised to sign for Spanish club Castellon after rejecting a new contract and an approach from Hibs.

"Partick Thistle were very good with us over Marc Twaddle and it would be disrespectful for me to talk about one of their players under contract," added May.
