Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale felt Chester deserved to hold his side to a goalless draw on Saturday.
The stalemate at the Deva Stadium extended the Grecians' undefeated run to five games but saw them slip out of the League Two play-off places.
"It was never going to be easy," Tisdale told BBC Radio Devon.
"We came upon a team who are playing to stop the rot. They've lost a lot of games and they were fighting to salvage anything they could."
Tisdale added: "We passed it better in the second half, but for the passing and territory we had, we didn't create enough crossing opportunities.
"It didn't quite work for us. But we certainly tried to do the right things and we just lacked a little bit of craft in certain situations which might have unpicked them."
