Dundee United midfielder Scott Robertson could be out for the rest of the season.
The recently-capped 23-year-old Scotland international has been diagnosed with osteo pubitis, which causes abdominal and groin pain.
Robertson underwent a scan on the injury on Thursday.
And, after receiving the results on Friday, manager Craig Levein said he will be out for at least three months and may not feature again this term.
"It'll be mostly rest and maybe an injection, which could keep him out for a while," said Levein after the diagnosis proved worse than first feared.
"Scott hasn't been training properly for a number of weeks."
Robertson has been in fine form this season, contributing five goals from midfield.
"There's no doubt it will be a big loss because he's been excellent," added Levein.
"But there are people waiting to play who are more than capable of doing a job."
