Lee Wilkie had a loan spell with Plymouth

The 26-year-old Scotland defender has been training at Tannadice for the past month as he recovers from injury following his release from Dundee.

And he said: "United have been brilliant to me by allowing me to come in and train with them.

"So there is no way I would just forget that and turn my back on them."

Wilkie played 45 minutes against Kilmarnock reserves last week and managed a full 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw with Dunfermline Athletic's second string on Tuesday.

And that attracted the interest of Plymouth boss Ian Holloway, who offered him a trial, while there is also reportedly interest from Gretna, Sheffield Wednesday and QPR.

"I'm a Dundee boy, so staying in the city would be ideal because I want to be close to my wee lad," said Wilkie.

Wilkie can play once more as a trialist before a decision needs to be made on his future and is likely to feature against St Mirren in the reserve league next week.

Given his history with injuries, it is likely any deal will be heavily weighted on appearances.

But he is prepared to accept that and is aiming to be in a position to play in a month's time.

Plymouth manager Ian Holloway had said: "He's had problems with his knee, but he's the type we are looking for.

"We will let us know when he's ready, but I'm interested in having a look at him. We've had good reports.

"He's trying to get fit and he will choose when he comes down, which I think is really professional of him."

Wilkie had a one-month loan spell with Plymouth in 2001, when Wednesday boss Paul Sturrock was manager.

But he has suffered three cruciate knee ligament injuries since January 2004.

And he was one of a group of players asked to take a pay cut by cash-strapped Dundee this summer.
