Derby County ponder deal for Macclesfield's John Rooney
Nineteen-year-old John is the youngest of three Rooney brothers
Derby County manager Nigel Clough says trialist John Rooney will need to play a competitive match before he decides whether to offer the striker a deal.
Macclesfield Town forward Rooney, 19 - the brother of Manchester United and England striker Wayne - has been training with the Rams this week.
Clough told BBC Radio Derby: "We have to see him in a game. He's looked okay in training and he's got something.
"We need to see if he will knock on the door next season if we take him."
Rooney has not been a regular for the Silkmen this season and has not started a league match so far this year.
Clough was hoping to watch the teenager in a friendly this week, but the freezing weather meant that was not possible.
He added: "Is he as good as some of the young players we have coming through? We'll try to assess that in a game next week."
