Clough's side lie five points above the relegation zone
Derby County manager Nigel Clough says his side were trying to be too clever in their 3-2 defeat to Wolves.
Clough told BBC Radio Derby: "I'm pleased we haven't got the points because we didn't deserve them having done the things that we did.
"Instead of trying to smash the ball, hitting the target - players were trying to be clever instead of doing the simple things well."
The defeat came just 48 hours after victory at Sheffield Wednesday.
Clough added: "All the good play through the majority of the game is wasted by a combination of poor defending, naivety and trying to be clever."
The former Brewers boss said he wants to bring in players who will play with "enthusiasm, determination and hunger" next season.
"It will be players who want to do the right things, want to do the things they are asked to do and who have a little understanding and thought about the game," said Clough.
