Jewell says Rams can match Stoke

Jewell wants a boost in central defence, midfield and up front

Derby County manager Paul Jewell is confident the Rams can match Premier League opposition Stoke in their Carling Cup quarter-final on Tuesday.

Jewell told BBC Radio Derby: "Ability-wise we've got some decent players.

"Last year they were in the Championship and we were in the Premier League, so it's not as if there's a chasm of difference between us."

A win could set up a tie with Manchester United or Arsenal - who are also in contention for the semi-finals.

Jewell said he has great respect for the work manager Tony Pulis has done at Stoke.

"People want to talk about the long throws and long ball but I don't think Tony Pulis gets enough credit.

"He's done a great job there.

"I know Tony well. He's quite happy for everyone to talk about how horrible Stoke are to play against because a lot of people are frightened before they get there," Jewell said.

Jewell said his side would need to be at 100% strength to progress to the semi-final stages.

"We respect each side we play against but we can't be fearful of them.

"We have to take the game to Stoke as we're better playing at full tilt in people's faces."
