Penney rubbishes Terriers rumours

Penney has played down reports linking him with managerial vacancies

Darlington manager Dave Penney has played down reports linking him with the vacant managerial position at League One side Huddersfield Town.

Penney, 44, led his side to a 1-0 win against Bury in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday and was quick to dismiss any links with the job.

"It's the first I've heard. I knew Stan [Ternent] had gone this morning," he told BBC Tees.

"I don't read anything into that. I've certainly not heard anything."

The Quakers progressed to the Northern section semi-finals of the JP Trophy thanks to a second-half strike from defender Alan White and are now just three games away from a Wembley final.

However competition rules stipulate clubs must field at least six of their frequently appearing players, a law that has caused problems for Penney and his injury-hit squad.

The Yorkshireman would like to see changes made to alleviate the pressure on the clubs taking part.

"We wanted to change things if we could but we had to play six of the 11 and with three missing we had to play six of the eight," he said.

"It's a silly rule. We wanted to get Ian Miller a game but he had to miss out because we wanted to give Robin [Hulbert] a game and [David] Poole a game.

"It takes me the longest to pick the team, working out the appearances, and something needs to be looked at this - the sponsors of the competition can't tell you who to pick for a game."
