Team spirit key to form - Penney

Dave Penney
Penney has seen his side respond well to their disappointing start

Darlington manager Dave Penney has hailed the strong bond within his first-team squad as a major factor in their upturn in fortunes.

The Quakers are currently unbeaten in five games after Monday's defeat of Bradford and Penney believes the team ethic has generated that form.

"We've got a little bit of momentum going now," he told BBC Tees.

"There's a togetherness there and it gets a little extra when you're winning games and enjoying it."

Last season's promotion challenge was littered with injuries to players such as striker Pawel Abbott at vital stages of the season, which ultimately cost Darlington when they slipped away from the top of the table and were beaten by Rochdale in the play-offs.

However, this season Penney is confident his players are fitter, sharper and stronger to cope with the rigours of League Two football.

"Everybody in the last three or four games has been excellent and we're only having to change things if we've got injuries or suspensions," he said.

"They didn't look tired at all [against Bradford], they looked as bright and sharp on the Saturday as they did on Monday.

"They're enjoying it at the moment and no-one seems to get injured or wants to come out of the team obviously when you're doing well."
