Ashley Westwood pleased with Crewe Alexandra defence
Westwood rejoined Crewe in March
Crewe defender Ashley Westwood believes the team's new-found defensive solidity can form the basis of a renewed promotion push.
The Alex have kept four clean sheets in their last six games and Westwood says the whole team deserves credit.
"We seem to have been in control in most of the games, we're working hard and hopefully we can keep that going," the 34-year-old told BBC Radio Stoke.
"It's not just down to the defence, the whole team is working hard."
A poor run away from home has seen the Alex slip to 12th in League Two, six points off seventh-placed Torquay but Westwood believes they have the base from which to turn that form around.
I'm taking each game as it comes, there's still six to go so there's a lot of work left to do

"Even with the Hereford game we lost they didn't create too many chances and we had a clean sheet against Accrington," he said.
Westwood has featured in each of the last three games including Saturday's 8-1 demolition of Cheltenham, after returning to the club at which he made his name in March.
His current deal lasts until the end of the season but the experienced defender says he is not looking beyond that yet.
"As long as I keep playing and keep getting picked I must be doing something right," he said.
