Crewe boss Dario Gradi says he has missed out on signing a Manchester City defender on loan after Kolo Toure was suspended for failing a drugs test.
"(City coach) David Platt was very good and had made the arrangements for us to borrow one of his young players," Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke.
"That was almost done and dusted, but the problem they've got with Toure has put paid to that for the time being.
"It's not dead but it's not going to happen this weekend."
Crewe have conceded 17 goals in their last six matches and Gradi has been continuously searching for defensive reinforcements.
Toure was suspended indefinitely on Thursday after testing positive for a specified substance.
