Artell began his career as a trainee with Rotherham
Crewe defender David Artell has warned his new team-mates they must increase the number of clean sheets they keep.
The Alex conceded 73 goals in League Two last season - more than any other club apart from relegated Darlington.
Artell told BBC Radio Stoke: "We have to aim for 20 to 25 clean sheets and if we can do that we will be in the promotion race."
The 29-year-old made 110 appearances in three years at Morecambe before leaving on a free transfer.
In an attempt to improve their defensive record manager Dario Gradi has added experienced former Bristol Rovers goalkeeper Steve Phillips to his squad and offered ex-Peterborough United left-back Danny Blanchett a one-year contract.
Gradi said: "We are working hard in the pre-season on the whole team and as individuals to defend better and while we have yet to play a strong team the signs are good that the players are taking on board what we want from them."
