Crewe manager Dario Gradi will take a look at former QPR midfielder Danny Maguire in a friendly against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday.
Gradi was contacted by the 20-year-old's grandfather asking for a trial.
"He was impressive in training on Monday and we'll have another look at him," Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke.
"Initially it was to do someone a favour, to have a look at him and say 'maybe not for us, but try this club' and that may still be the case."
Danny Maguire did not make a first-team appearance at Loftus Road and started once in a loan spell at Yeovil at the end of the 2008/09 season.
Gradi will also take a final look at Danny Blanchett, Chris Stokes, Adam Dugdale, Lewis Short and Jimmy McCarthy against the Premier League newcomers.
